Answer: The area of West Africa became the "Guinea" coast on 15th Century maps as Portugese navigators learned that Berber traders used the term for the "Land of the Guinea (Black man)" according to the Encl Britannica. I know the current flowing under the "bulge" of Africa is still called the Guinea Current. BTW the Brit coin guinea was called that because the gold used in the coin was mined in...Guinea, Africa!
