difference between new york and new york city?

Question: ok i may sound dumb but i'm curious .... what is the difference between new york and new york city? like i know places like manhattan, queens, bronx are in new york city and rockland county, albany, saratoga, and all these lame places are in NEW YORK. they r both new york, then why are they so far apart from each other? like from manhattan to albany would take forever but theyre both new york!!!!!!! and how the hell is buffalo, NEW YORK near canada and times square isnt.

Answer: New York is a state in the United States. New York City is a city that is in the state of New York. So if you were to write out the address it would be: New York, NY. (the first part for the city New York and the second part is the state of New York)
